Our Social Media Executive's mission is to bring exciting new content to cruise fans

Social Media Executive, Matt Sparks

I enjoy being in touch with customers via social media. It feels great to fix someone’s problem! - says Matt

How long have you worked for P&O Cruises?

I’ve worked at P&O Cruises head office for two years as part of the social media team. Although I’ve never worked on board, I’ve been lucky enough to sail on a few of our ships during my time here. When I’m on board, I meet with guests and crew members to source interesting content to show our loyal social media followers.

What does your job involve?

It’s my job to ensure we post interesting content on Facebook, Twitter and on the company blog that our guests will enjoy. Then I look at data and put together reports on what our followers like to read about. We’re getting more and more customer queries coming in via social media, so I work closely with our customer services team to answer guests’ questions as quickly as possible.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Picking one thing is difficult! I find social media fascinating, so I feel privileged to be able to do it for a living. I feel proud when something I’ve posted online is well received. I also enjoy being directly in touch with our customers via social media and it feels really good to be able to fix their problem. I’m from Southampton, where P&O Cruises head office is, so I was aware of the company when I was growing up and now feel very proud to work for them.

What are the main challenges of your job?

The world of social media is fast paced and constantly changing, so one of the biggest challenges is keeping up to speed with new technology and platforms. It can also be tricky to manage internal changes and developments because priorities and strategies can shift at a moment’s notice. New technology is always entering the marketplace, so being organised and keeping a keen eye on the industry is a must.

What has been your favourite destination so far?

One of the best places I’ve ever been to is Barbados. The locals are extremely friendly, the beaches are incredible and the whole place has a happy, relaxed vibe. You know you’re on holiday when you’re in the Caribbean sun, cocktail in hand!
