Noumea

Noumea is the capital city of the French territory of New Caledonia. It occupies a small peninsula on the southwest corner of the archipelago's main island, Grand Terre, east of Australia. Ask anyone who's been there and they'll no doubt rave about its beautiful paradise beaches. And with good reason. There are so many reasons to get excited about Noumea. Not least of which is its fabulous cuisine - a mouthwatering mingling of French and native Kanak styles. If you're not enjoying the water sports or whizzing around the pristine countryside on a tour, then head for the Latin quarter. Here you'll find a host of bistros and boutique stores - perfect for picking up a designer bargain. The Aquarium des Lagons is ideal if you'd like to while away a few hours, marvelling at the local marine life. And if you'd like to know more about Kanak culture, head for the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre.
