About La Coruna

The name of Coruna's cruise dock - Transatlantic Quay - reflects its location on the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsular making it - you might be surprised to learn - the closest European port to New York.

It is a charming mixture of old town and new town also with a couple of beaches along the two-mile stretch of coastline it overlooks. The colonnaded Maria Pita Square is at the heart of the old town, with many shops, bars and restaurants all around. There are various fascinating museums including the interactive House of Mankind plus an aquarium and planetarium.

Coruna is also the main Atlantic gateway to one of the most ruggedly scenic regions in Spain - Galicia. Among its attractions is one of the worlds great pilgrimage destinations: Santiago de Compostela, with its Romanesque cathedral.

Duration: 3¼ hours

A scenic slice of Spanish life that offers charming villages, stunning views and delicious tapas served with local wine.

Your journey from La Coruna will take you through the Galician High Estuaries known by many as ‘land of a thousand rivers’. Along the way, take in weather-worn hills sprinkled with tiny tranquil villages, verdant valleys and sheltered fishing ports as your guide brings the history of this fascinating area to life.

Your first stop is the charming medieval fishing village of Pontedeume at the foot of Breamo Mountain. Founded by King Alfonso the Wise in 1270, be sure your camera is on hand to capture this delightfully peaceful and picturesque community. You’ll also have the opportunity to look inside the 14th Century Tower of Andrade - a monument to Pontedeume’s military past.

Continue on your coach to the municipality of Bergondo with fabulous views over the Betanzos Estuary. Here, you’ll visit a local restaurant for a delicious selection of Spanish tapas served with locally produced wine and accompanied by a magnificent outlook over the bay.

Pass by the village of Sada on your way to Santa Cruz. Now a serene haven, the port’s location at the La Coruna Estuary resulted in a troubled history. Enjoy a photo stop at the Castle of Santa Cruz, which encapsulates an entire islet around 50 metres off shore. A panoramic return drive gives you the final opportunity to take in the atmosphere of this wonderful region.
