About Alta

Situated in the Land of the Midnight Sun, Alta is home to the world's first Northern Light observatory was built here, earning Alta the title, ' The Town of the Northern Lights', so you could be no better placed to see this spectacular natural phenomenon if luck is on your side. Other sights of interest include the rock carvings at Hjemmeluft - the first of which was discovered just 60 years ago. The site is now UNESCO protected due to its significance and size and comprises carvings and paintings made between 1800 to 6200 years ago.

Alta Countryside And Scenery

Enjoy the diverse scenery of the Norwegian countryside and make a visit to Sautso Power Plant and Dam.

Your journey begins with a leisurely drive through Alta city centre before travelling out to the scenic Norwegian countryside. As you travel to Sautso, the largest canyon in northern Europe, you’ll pass fertile farmlands, lush valleys, dramatic mountains, sparkling lakes and the scattered dwellings of the Sami indigenous people.

Your drive will take you to the top of the 360 foot concrete dam, where you’ll visit the exhibition room, located in the mountain alongside the dam. An audio-visual film will be shown about the construction of the dam, the surrounding areas and the company’s commitment to preserve and protect the rivers and natural habitat. The reservoir and dam can be seen through a panoramic window or for uninterrupted views of the areas there is the option to walk across the top of the dam.

On the scenic return to your ship, a stop will be made at a viewpoint to take photographs of Alta Canyon.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. There are 14 steps to access the toilets at the power station. There is some uneven terrain at Alta Canyon Viewpoint. The Sautso Dam is accessible via a 200 yard tunnel.

Alta Husky Adventure

Admire the breathtaking scenery on a dog sledge ride before relaxing with refreshments around a log fire in a traditional ‘Lavvu’.

On arrival at the Husky Centre, you’ll be greeted by the friendly, excited dogs, as well as your experienced driver, before boarding your allocated sledge and embarking on your husky adventure. Relax on the comfortable reindeer skins and admire the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape as your driver negotiates their way through the scenic terrain. The panorama will vary from vast white fields to snow-topped trees and frozen rivers.

After the excitement of your journey, you’ll have the chance to relax and share your experience with your fellow passengers in a cosy ‘Lavvu’ (Sámi tent). Here you can enjoy hot drinks and the warmth of a roaring log fire, whilst your host shares their stories and tales, talks about their daily life and explains how the dogs are trained for the Finnmarksløpet - Europe’s longest dog race covering 621 miles.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach and dog sledge. This tour is dependent on snow and usually operates between the months of January and March. Children must be aged 4 years or over in order to participate on this tour. Please ensure you dress in warm clothing (layers) and wear sturdy and warm enclosed shoes, a hat and gloves. The sledge ride lasts around 20 minutes depending on the conditions. Each sledge holds 2-3 passengers. This tour involves walking over uneven, snowy ground. Early pre-booking of this tour is highly recommended due to its limited capacity and expected popularity.

Huskies And History

Combine the interesting sights and history of Alta with arctic tales and friendly working huskies.

Journey to a local husky farm where upon arrival you’ll be welcomed into the garden, and served refreshments of ice tea, coffee and cookies whilst your host relays arctic tales. After refreshments, you’ll be able to meet the working dogs, whose friendly nature makes them very affectionate.

Leaving the farm, you’ll visit the interesting Alta Museum, which was awarded European Museum of the Year in 1993. It houses historical exhibitions depicting the ancient Komsa Culture, the old Market Place in Bossekop, the Northern Lights, military history, local history and a fine collection of Sami costumes and household implements.

Outside the Museum, a series of wooden, asphalt and gravel footpaths will take you on a 1 hour leisurely walk around the famous UNESCO pre-historic rock carvings. Discovered in 1973, these fascinating and enigmatic carvings, which date back between 2,000 to 6,200 years, portray activities and rituals from the Stone Age and represent people, boats, weapons and hunting scenes from those times.

Before returning to the ship, a brief drive through the town will bring you to the quaint neo-Gothic style Alta Church, where a stop will be made for photos.

This excursion will operate by coach and on foot. At the Husky Farm there are uneven gravel and grass surfaces. The huskies are friendly and may jump up at you, so please dress accordingly. There are 2 floors in Alta Museum, the upper level is accessed via stairs or the lift.

Igloo Hotel Visit

Explore the famous Igloo Hotel at leisure followed by an ‘ice cold’ drink at the ice bar.

Sit back, relax and admire the gorgeous scenes of the winter landscape as you journey towards Sorrisniva and the delights of the unique Igloo Hotel - where you’re sure to receive a very warm welcome despite the indoor temperature being set between -4°c and -7°c chilly degrees.

You’ll be met by one of the duty managers who will provide you with all sorts of facts, figures and information about the construction of this unusual abode, which is re-built entirely from snow and ice each year. Learn how the overnight guests keep warm (via natural reindeer hides, special mattresses and sleeping bags) and how the theme of the hotel changes from year to year, before you wander from room to room to explore the chilly confines at your own pace.

There’ll be plenty of time for you to soak up the fairytale like atmosphere, study the ice decorations and admire the beautiful artworks before you discover the ice bar. Here you’ll conclude your visit with a refreshing drink, served in a glass that has been hand-carved from ice.

Layers of warm clothing are recommended as the temperatures inside the hotel are below freezing. The terrain is uneven (compacted snow) and therefore suitable footwear should be worn. This tour is not suitable for passengers with medical conditions that are affected by the extreme cold.

Igloo Hotel Visit and Snow Mobile Ride

Enjoy an exhilarating ride through breathtaking scenery on a snow mobile before visiting the unique Igloo Hotel.

Enjoy a scenic journey through a variety of winter landscapes to the famous Igloo Hotel in Sorrisniva. Created entirely of ice and snow the hotel has an indoor temperature of around -5°c, contains an ice chapel, an ice bar and 27 ice bedrooms.

On arrival, you’ll be kitted out with a helmet before boarding your self-drive snow mobile and, after a safety briefing and instructions you’ll be ready for your exhilarating drive. You’ll take the old trade route where the winter landscape varies from enchanting white forests and valleys to vast snow-covered plains and frozen rivers.

After your scenic ride, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the various ice rooms of the hotel and admire the ice sculptures before convening at the ice bar for a ‘cool’ drink, served in a glass made entirely from ice.
