We offer a number of cruises with evening or overnight stops, giving you the chance to check out the local nightlife

Exploring on shore with P&O Cruises isn’t a whistle-stop tour. We know the destinations are just as exciting as the journey, so we aim to give you as much time as possible in each port. And while a whole lot can be done in a day, some cities shine even brighter after dark.

We offer a number of cruises with evening or overnight stops, giving you the chance to check out the local nightlife. Evening calls typically follow a full day in port, and the ship will depart at or after 9pm. On an overnight call, the ship is normally in port for between 32 and 40 hours – plenty of time to see the sights in every light.

From stargazing to tapas tours, here are six unique experiences to enjoy when the sun sets.

Taste tapas in Barcelona

Night time in Barcelona is all about food and drink, and on this front, you’re spoilt for choice. You’ll find everything from family-run dining spots to Michelin-starred restaurants, beachside chiringuitos to Cava bars. Tapas are arguably the best way to get a taste of the city, and you can do just that on the Barcelona at Night with Tapas shore excursion, which combines a tour of the city’s sights with a selection of tasty tapas at a local restaurant.

Go stargazing in Tenerife

Mount Teide National Park in Tenerife is considered one of the best places in the world to observe the night sky. This is partly due to the mountain’s elevation – at 3,718m tall, it’s the highest point in Spain. See the stars like you’ve never seen them before on the Sunset and Stars on Teide tour. After ascending to the summit by cable car, relax as the sun sets over the lava-carved landscape from the Pico Viejo viewpoint, glass of Canarian sparkling wine in hand. Back at the cable car’s base station, you’ll be treated to a cocktail dinner designed by a Michelin-starred chef as the sky darkens and the stars begin to emerge.

Explore Tivoli after dark in Copenhagen

Beautiful Copenhagen is a fairytale come to life, and at its heart is the enchanting Tivoli Gardens. Since it opened in 1843, the park has served as inspiration for the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney, and has been a haven for locals and visitors alike who flock to it for a magical escape. It’s captivating around the clock, but perhaps never more so than at night, when twinkling lights add to the charm. Soak up the city views on the Ferris wheel, feel the thrills on one of the world’s oldest running wooden roller coasters or simply watch the world waltz by at one of the many cafés or restaurants. The Evening Harbour Cruise and Tivoli shore excursion includes entry to Tivoli.

Cruise Amsterdam’s canals by moonlight

Amsterdam’s canals are one of its defining features. There are 165 of them – adding up to more than 100km of waterways – and despite being 400 years old, they still form a vital part of the city’s transport network. They’ll be a focal point on any visit to Amsterdam, but to see the city from the water at night is a particularly awe-inspiring experience. On the Evening Scenic Cruise, you can get up close to the canals, bridges and local landmarks while sipping wine and tasting Dutch cheese and biscuits from the comfort of your boat. Your cruise will take in the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht canals, lined by trees and impressive buildings – an unforgettable sight by night.

See the bright lights of New York

Many a word has been written and sung about New York and its dazzling lights. Broadway, nicknamed the Great White Way due to its enchanting electric glow, was among the first streets in the US to be lit by electricity and today, it shines as bright as ever. Times Square, meanwhile, is aglow with millions of LED lights 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On the New York City Lights and Empire State Building tour, you can see the city lights from three different perspectives. From beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, feast your eyes on Manhattan across the East River. In Midtown, ascend the Empire State Building for breathtaking views from the 86th floor. Afterwards, spend some time in Times Square and take in the lively evening atmosphere.

Enjoy an evening at the ballet in St Petersburg

Ballet in St Petersburg has a long and celebrated history. Russia’s first ballet school was established on the request of Empress Anna in 1738, and over the past 280 years the dance has flourished into one of the city’s most enduring cultural icons. The second half of the 19th century in particular was a golden age for ballet, thanks in part to the musical genius of Tchaikovsky, whose masterpiece Swan Lake caused a sensation when it was first performed at St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. Experience the magic for yourself on the Ballet Evening shore excursion, where you’ll visit a traditional Russian theatre and enjoy a classical performance of Swan Lake.
