If you’re worried about how you’ll keep the children entertained while you’re on holiday, relax. In addition to all the exciting things they can get up to while on board, we also offer heaps of family-friendly shore excursions that will really make their holiday complete. What’s more, on selected excursions this summer, all children aged 3-12 can go half price. We’ve picked a few of our favourites in this offer to inspire you, but look out for more with the 50% off logo. Read on for six of our favourite family-friendly tours.

1. Explore an Atlantic waterworld in La Coruña

Duration: 3½ hours

Dive right in to La Coruña’s City Drive and Aquarium excursion. Children will be captivated by the Tower of Hercules – a granite lighthouse originally built by the Romans – at which you’ll stop on your way to the fabulous Aquarium Finisterrae. Built into the rocks on a headland, the interactive aquarium concentrates on sea life from the Atlantic, so expect lobster, octopus and a charming colony of seals. The Nautilus Room is based on the fictional study of Captain Nemo, captain of the submarine Nautilus in Jules Verne’s sci-fi classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. It holds an observation tank filled with Atlantic fish in 4.4 million litres of water – one of the largest tanks in Europe.

The City Drive and Aquarium tour is available on the following cruises: N815, N816, B820, R812, N820, R814

2. Relax on the beach in sophisticated Sitges

Duration: 6 hours

Sometimes, a few hours on the beach – with regular top-ups of ice cream – is the secret to a relaxed and happy family day. If you’re in need of some sun, sand and sea when in Barcelona, try the Transfer to Sitges Coastal Village excursion. This seaside resort has a slightly buzzy, bohemian vibe, but it’s small and friendly and offers 17 sandy beaches. The most central and family friendly is Platja de la Fragata, which has volleyball nets and pedalo hire. The town itself is charming, with whitewashed houses, a cobbled old town and lots of boutiques and art galleries. Tapas or seafood is the obvious choice for lunch, or you can pick up a delicious deli picnic of meats, cheeses, bread and fruit.

The Sitges Coastal Village tour is available on the following cruises: R811, A819, A821, B822, B824

3. Head to Tenerife for a splashing good time

Duration: 6 hours

If a quiet day building sandcastles sounds a bit tame for your family, you might prefer the lively resort of Playas de las Américas on Tenerife, and the Playas de las Américas On Your Own excursion. This is the biggest, most popular resort on the island, with six beaches, all sandy, with calm waters that are perfect for paddling. Cafés, restaurants and kiosks line the waterfront, lots of them catering specifically to their many British visitors, and there are loads of family-friendly water-based activities, such as banana boats, flyboarding, submarine safaris and BOB diving (like scuba diving but on a scooter – masses of fun and no experience necessary!).

The Playas de las Américas On Your Own excursion is available on the following cruises: R812, R814, N816, N820

4. Take a drive on the wild side

Duration: 5 hours

Be prepared for some breathtaking sights on the Cabárceno Nature Park excursion from Santander. Located in the Cantabrian Mountains of northern Spain within the Peña Cabarga Nature Reserve, is home to over 100 animal species from around the world – including African elephants, Bengal tigers, lions, jaguars and rhinos – roaming freely within enclosures in a semi-wild environment. You’ll take a scenic (and safe!) drive through the park, stopping at viewpoints along the way. Then you can stretch your legs and enjoy gardens, a reptile house, play areas and plenty of places to eat and drink. There is also an optional cable-car ride for spectacular bird’s-eye views. You’ll have approximately two hours of free time to purchase lunch and explore the park independently, before the return journey to Santander.

The Cabárceno Nature Park excursion is available on the following cruise: B820

5. Meet real Vikings in Flåm

Duration: 4 hours

Parents, no need to pretend. Your children will encounter real Vikings if they brave the journey from Flåm to the unique village of Njardarheimr, for the Viking Village and Tvinde Waterfall excursion. The thrilling coach trip takes in a 9 km tunnel through a mountain, spectacular waterfalls and Norway’s steepest road, with 13 hairpin bends. Once you arrive you’ll find these modern-day Vikings are a friendly bunch, keen to show you how their ancestors would have lived 1,000 years ago. These enthusiasts keep the traditional Viking handicrafts, cuisine and skills alive and are happy to share them with you – have a go at throwing an axe or using a bow and arrow, and enjoy an authentic Viking lunch in the food house.

The Viking Village and Tvinde Waterfall excursion is available on the following cruises: B821, N819, B823, A822

6. Go tobogganing in Madeira

Duration: 3 hours

Get your adrenaline pumping with a bone-rattling wicker-sled race downhill from Monte, a genteel hillside suburb of Funchal in Madeira, on the Cable Car and Toboggan tour. Getting to the top is easy enough. You ascend in a cable car, majestically rising over the tops of pretty, flower-filled gardens and quaint old houses. The journey back feels altogether quicker. Your ‘drivers’ run alongside you in rubber-soled boots, expertly nudging your toboggan down the steep narrow streets. It’s exhilarating – whether your child is aged four or 14, expect an ‘again!’ when you reach the bottom. And fortunately for mum and dad, the tour ends with a trip to a wine lodge so that the adults can sample various Madeiran wines.

The Cable Car and Toboggan tour is available on the following cruises: R812, N820, R814

All shore excursions can be booked via Cruise Personaliser. Prices vary; child prices are for those aged 3 to 12 inclusively, while guests aged 13 and over pay adult prices. The 50% discount offer applies to selected tours during the summer holidays.
